About book Running Like A Girl (2013)

I've always had a secret desire to run a marathon or other road race, but the fact is: an athlete I'm not. I've tried many times to pick up running, only to have it fizzle out after a couple weeks. It's just not for me. Or so I thought...Until reading this wonderful book. Memoir-ish and with the slight edge of Bridget Jones, this is SUCH a great book for any woman who is daunted by running. Heminsley addresses all the things that you never read about: how to buy a better sports bra (and why it's medically important); how to find (and more importantly, take) good advice; how to not be terrified of snobby athlete stores, safety, injury, or monthly visit worries; how to nourish yourself for health; and more. She keeps things very lighthearted without dumbing it down or excluding the harder parts of her journey; readers leave feeling they know what the experience of running marathons is like without feeling totally daunted. If anyone (but particularly a lady) is looking for inspiration for any sort of activity but especially for a marathon, pick this up. It's a super fast, fun read that will prepare you and give you the giggles. Such a great book. - I guess it wasn't quite what I expected- It definitely comes across as a very "real" voice that talks about running but so much of it seemed focused on what a struggle it is, how much pain and suffering there is, and the repeated notion that it's all worth it in the end- It is kind of inspiring at the start but then somehow the negativity kind of seems to overshadow the joy of running...- The practical guide section at the back was a nice touch but some of it didn't feel particularly applicable to me- Felt disjointed- A string of threads about the various races she's participated in but no real conclusion- Also, jumps between chapters were a bit strange
