About book Rose In A Storm (Center Point Platinum Fiction (Large Print)) (2010)

I read the books about Rose because my neighbor and friend owned a border collie named Molly who took many walks with me and became my friend. Jon Katz has done a wonderful job reflecting the Border Collie's intelligence and how they protect their borders, owners and their owner's friends. These books are great for anyone who loves dogs. For anyone who is contemplating ownership of a border collie, this is a great read. One of my friends read this book after I told her about it and now she and her husband are the proud owners of a fabulous border collie. Thank you Jon Katz for writing about Rose! I am an unabashed lover of dogs and books about dogs; a real sucker for the concept of the loyalty and devotion of a dog for its master. With ROSE IN A STORM by John Katz my sentimentality gene was placed in a virtual holding pattern as Rose, the not quite human Border collie with a no nonsense approach to life in general and work in particular, managed to survive the many trials and tribulations that befell her. Like a vigilant nurse-maid this dog's main objective is guarding and protecting those entrusted to her care no matter what the cost.I realize that Border Collies are considered to be the most intelligent of dogs but Rose is portrayed as having human-like qualities and her dreams coupled with her almost supernatural ability to communicate with the spirits of dying animals makes her come across as the canine version of Melinda Gordon (The Ghost Whisperer. You can almost hear Rose telling the dying animal to "go into the light".........and while I'd like to think that my two little dogs will someday meet me at the pearly gates, this aspect of the story was just a little too "One Step Beyond" for me. Perhaps I'm being too pragmatic, and while I did enjoy certain aspects of Katz's story, I couldn't really get into Rose's role in the philosophical and metaphysical aspects of the narrative. This is a novella length tale so if it's a quick read your after, this book may be for you. For this reader, however, the power of a dog's love and devotion as well ruminations on life from a dog's point of view are more aptly portrayed in H. Bruce Cameron's A DOG'S PURPOSE or Garth Stein's THE ART OF RACING IN THE RAIN.
