I'm not sure what to make of this story. If I try not to read too much between the lines, it reads as if Stephen King couldn't just figure out how to go about this story and kept throwing different ideas around. In most of the story, he tells you how it might go and then rejects the idea as too cliched and goes in a different direction. This continues until the end when he just ends the story in the most mundane fashion possible. But if I do read between the lines, it becomes a startling commentary on the disjointed nature of relationships between parents and children....which actually is crazy, maybe I'm reading too much and creating this "subtext" out of thin air!The commentary and the questions that it raises are very interesting though. Parents usually make numerous sacrifices for their children, but are we, as children, ever able to do the same for them? Are we obliged to do the same for them? How about ab extreme scenario - if both you and your mother were stuck on train tracks and the only way to save her was to push her off and sacrifice yourself, would you do it? Or would you jump off the tracks and save your life instead? Or would you just stay their and die with her? The answer could be tough. But will it be a difficult choice for your mother as well? I bet, she'll readily sacrifice herself to save you. What if it was giving up your career to take care of your parents? What if it was ruining your personal life by letting them stay with you? How about using up your vacation days every year to go visit them because that'd make them happy? If you make decisions that don't make them happy, they'll still keep loving you anyway. The relationship is fundamentally disjointed in most cases and we realize this fact when chips are down and some real choices have to be made. These questions actually make this story rather sweet, if you ask me, even though there is plenty of better literature that focuses on similar topics. Guess this is a short study of family values in this real world Stephen King style.The title riding the bullets also makes sense when you start thinking of it all that way. You'll have to ride the bullet in this life, no matter how much you try to run from it all. Oh, and what about that button/pin nonsense? Here's my understanding - [SPOILER START]The mother got the button anyway after the kid chickened out. He has to "ride the bullet" eventually to be able to finally have the prize. The mother has been riding the bullet for her whole life for what it's worth. [SPOILER END]

Natürlich kann ich es nicht beschwören, aber sie ist wahr. Jedes Wort. Und das macht sie zu einem wahren Alptraum. Er war jetzt mein Button - Glücksbringer oder Unheilbringer -, er gehörte mir."Dieser Button spielte eine ganz wichtige Rolle in seinem Leben, ob es nun Aberglaube sein mag - nein, das glaube ich nicht! Kings Schreibstil ist hier leicht und flüssig, die 96 Seiten sind im Nu gelesen. Als King Fan sollte man Diese - seine Geschichte - gelesen haben. Es handelt sich hierbei um keine blutrünstige Geschichte, wie man sie vielleicht von King kennt und erwartet, sie beschäftigt einen lediglich: Das Jenseits und das Diesseits - der Übergang ist vielleicht doch nicht immer so klar, wie wir meinen...
Do You like book Riding The Bullet (2002)?
This was one of those short Stephen King teases of a book --- where he sets up a lot of atmosphere, centered on a mysterious idea, and he's more interested in the process than the product or ending. It was a fun book to listen to in the car while driving long distances, but when everything was said and done, it was just okay. Not near as satisfying as the book I listened to previous to this (King's "Joyland") , so I wouldn't recommend it in comparison to King's others. This isn't one of my favorites, and I've read almost everything he's written.

En mi opinión esté libro no está dentro de los mejores de SK, sin embargo, como menciona el autor al principio, lleva consigo un hecho muy relevante, que es su publicación pionera de forma virtual (previo a su publicación en físico), es decir, en forma de ebook, lo cual abre las puertas a que se lean libros por medios electrónicos. Claro que no se pretende sustituir la experiencia que los lectores tienen al leer libros físicamente, simplemente es una adición más, y ambos métodos de publicación suponen experiencias distintas.
