The Richest Season deals with a corporate wife of 25 years who, unhappy with her life, decides to reinvent it. She leaves her home for Pawley’s Island, South Carolina where she interacts with the local residents and becomes a part of the community through her jobs and other activities.The atmosphere that McFadden creates in her descriptions is the strongest element of The Richest Season. Some of these are so intense and well-drawn that you can feel the presence of the beach on every page. This is what helped me to keep reading right through to the end. On the whole though, I had difficulties with some areas of the book.The following is not a spoiler (it’s on the back of the book): Joanna is upset because her husband’s new promotion means she’ll have to leave her home again and move to somewhere she knows nobody. Her reaction to this is to suddenly leave her home and move to somewhere she knows nobody! That sat badly with me the whole book. It made it difficult to really understand her.Additionally, I found that the other characters were not fully realized. In the same way that I didn’t really buy into Joanna’s decision, I didn’t really accept Paul’s almost perfect transformation into what his wife would have preferred him to be. On the other hand, Grace has a secret which is not revealed until quite late into the story. This makes her character quite unequivocal which I found suited the story. When the secret is revealed, her behavior becomes understandable. On the whole, I read this through to try to give it a fair chance. I discovered that Mary McFadden is talented, but it is also fair to say that her work is somewhat derivative and she has not yet truly found her own voice. Romanzo interessante, che effettivamente, come sostiene il "Publishers Weekly" ti prende e ti obbliga ad arrivare fino alla fine. Inizialmente è facile schierarsi dalla parte di Joanna, moglie dimenticata e frustrata che vuole dare "gli ultimi colpi" abbandonando una vita piatta e un marito assente. Questa lascia la sua grande e ricca casa per stabilirsi al sud, a Pawleys Island, un piccolo "paradiso" formato da semplici persone che si conoscono da una vita e si affollano attorno alla nuova arrivata. Si stabilisce a casa di Grace, anziana signora che ha perso il marito malato di cancro e che sta morendo anch'essa per la medesima malattia. La convivenza da difficile e forzata si trasformerà in armonia e affetto e terminerà solo alla morte di Grace. La narrazione della nuova vita di Joanna, tra progetti, articoli e un nuovo amore, si alterna a quella di Paul, il vero vincitore morale del libro a parer mio, che dopo aver perso il lavoro che tanto gli stava a cuore e che aveva portato l'amore della sua vita ad allontanarsi da lui, comincia anch'egli una nuova vita, più semplice e felice, a partire dalla vendita della casa fino al nuovo lavoro da "tuttofare del quartiere" che lo porterà a un flirt con una donna sposata e annoiata, un po' com'era sua moglie. Ben presto però si renderà conto di quanto tiene alla moglie e, complici i figli, che rivalutano il padre e gli insegnano a dare il giusto valore alle cose, riuscirà a riconquistarla e a continuare la loro vita insieme.Tutto il libro si basa sulla speranza, sul desiderio di riprendere in mano la propria vita e dargli un senso, perchè anche quando sembra che il nostro cammino sia stato scritto e che non ci sia modo di cambiare le cose, c'è sempre una soluzione, c'è sempre una via di scampo alla nostra infelicità e spesso la si trova nei posti più inaspettati o nelle persone più inaspettate.
