About book Returner's Wealth (2010)

An amazing epic fantasy from start to finish! Stewart and Riddell have created a wonderfully imaginative fantasy world that will certainly capture the interest of young readers with a passion for adventure and dragons! Due to the gory and graphic nature of the novel, I would recommend this for older children...mid- to late teens. But with that being said, the novel itself is well-written with rich details and very thorough character development that immediately transport the reader to the world of Wyrmeweald filled with its mythical creatures and magical encounters. I truly enjoyed this adventure and look forward to continuing this series! I would certainly recommend this to fans of fantasy! Wyrmeweald is essentially the Edge Chronicles for older children. It is pretty violent and gory in places and there's even some mild sex references. The story see seventeen-year old Micah head into Wyrmeweald to make his fortune so that he can take it back to the love of his life. Typically things don't go as well as planned and Micah faces all sorts of terrible danger. Much like the Edge, Wyrmeweald is a fantastic fantasy world. It is inhabited by Wyrme's, which are essentially dragons. These are not the friendly dragons you see in many modern fantasy stories but vicious monsters who are like more terrifying version of our own wild animals. The world is inhabited by great characters too. There's Eli, the cragclimber who befriends Micah and Thrace, a girl who has a deep connection with a wyrme. Micah himself doesn't actually do much and I feel his characterisation would have worked better if the book was written in first person. The other characters do kind of make up for it and there are also some great villains. Wyrmeweald is a great world but it almost feels like the authors didn't quite know what to do with the story. Micah's tale is pretty unoriginal even if the threats within it are not. And though Riddell's illustrations are great there just aren't that many of them. The first Wyrmeweald book then is one which doesn't quite live up to it's potential. Maybe the sequels do...
