This was a very strange experience for me. I have never really been all that interested in zombies or the reanimation of the deceased within the Sci-Fi genre. I just never took to this novel, maybe my lack of interest in the subject played a major part in that. The characters were fine, the idea was fine and the plot development ran at a decent pace too. I just found myself bored throughout. Maybe I will revisit it at another time. In the future the Enforcers Guild protects the people. Resurrection Inc. brings the dead back as Servants - mindless reanimated bodies that are controlled by computer chips in the brain. Neo-Satanism was the predominant religion of the masses. With the creation of the servants many common jobs are done by the dead, leaving a huge number of people out of work. However, when Danal, a victim of Neo-Satanism, awakens in a servant body with his memories and personality from before his death, everything will change.I stumbled on this title while I was at the 2014 Dallas ComicCon. I heard that the author was doing a panel and stopped in to listen to him speak. He mentioned several of his works and series, but at one point he said that this, his first novel, was still one of his favorites. So... Of course I bought a copy and got it signed by the author while I was there. Now I have finally finished reading. While the book has several dark themes, it also provides some concepts for consideration. What would happen if something took over the menial workforce (robots, androids, servants, whatever)? What happens after death and can the mind retain memories, even personality after death? Is there a way to trigger those memories or even reanimate a body once it is dead? What is the nature of religion? Although this book does a decent job exploring these topics, his portrayal of religion is a bit off. The book focuses only on the blind belief and ritual of religion, completely missing the true nature of spirituality. Even so, the story was interesting and fresh. While dark at times, it was and interesting read with a lot packed in a small book. One last note of warning... This book is definitely not for everyone. It has dark scenes and themes and will likely offend some readers. However, if this review caught your interest, you might give it a try.
