About book Refining Felicity (1988)

I must admit I fell in love with this book and read it really really fast. It was a very light read, although at first it was a little hard to grow into the scenery of the story, but then I connected with the characters and all fell into place. The book tells the story of two spinster sisters, Effie and Amy Tribble, who are high class but due to misfortunes of life itself are left with no money and in real difficulties. I must say I now simply adore Amy Tribble and the way she acts and reacts to all the things that happen around her. I love the strong willed woman that Amy represents, specially in comparison with her fragile and silly sister, Effie Tribble. Facing problems like starvation and a cold and empty house, they struggle to make ends meet and decide to make good use of their qualities by teaching difficult girls how to behave in society. Their first client is Lady Felicity Vane with her impossible personality and masculine manners. They're faced with the tough task of marring her off to a good masculine specimen worthy of a noble tittle. As a jump start the reader doesn't need to now anything else, even because things in this book are not always what they seem and you can and should expect some twists and turns along the way. I never read a book by this author before and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. This kind of historical fiction is really my type of reading material, but I always like to step out of my comfort zone and now I will keep on reading the other books of this series. The story had a fast paced rhythm that I enjoy deeply because I never got tired of the setting the story was taking place and because the author was not dueling on dismissible aspects. It also had a comic note that I liked a lot and accompanied by a romantic relief with was simply great.

Another somewhat silly romance by Marion Chesney. I liked this one quite a lot, though. It was definitely a change over some of the others of hers I have read this year. The main difference is that the book is largely centered around a pair of spinster sisters who were well-born and well-bred, but, because they didn't manage to marry, are now quite poor. However, since they still have good social connections--though are considered quite eccentric--they decide to hire themselves out as chaperones for the Season. To get as much money as possible, they advertise for "difficult young ladies." And so, they get Felicity, who has been raised as the son her father never had. She swears like sailor, wears men's clothes, and hunts with the men. So, the challenge is to get Felicity married well. In the end, the Tribble sisters do get Felicity to change somewhat, but she actually keeps a lot of her original character. And, she doesn't really make any changes to get a particular man, but rather because of the relationship she develops with the Tribbles (particulary with Amy). So, although she does get her man in the end, it was more satisfying than some of the other Chesney books, when the women change drastically for a man.

This book was such a nice change of pace. It was a lighthearted Regency romance that had a many comic scenes provided by the Tribble sisters., Amy and Effy. This is the first book in Marion Chesney's six book series; “The School for Manner’s”. I’ve read all of Chesney’s “Agatha Raisin” series, and enjoyed her humorous turn with Agatha’s character. (Chesney wrote the Raisin series under the pseudonym of M.C. Beaton.) In this opening book in the series, he genteel but poverty stricken Tribble sisters open a boot camp of sorts for young women who lack the traditional feminine training to successfully complete their first London Season. Their first reluctant pupil is Lady Felicity, and boy does she give them a run for their money. This book had me laughing out loud quite a few times by Amy Tribble’s antics for the most part. It’s a fun little book that that is an entertaining way to while away a few hours when you just want a break from it all.
