Cornwell is definitely a good writer. This is another good murder mystery from her. At the beginning of the book, I got the feeling (once again, with Cornwell's books) that I had been dropped down in the middle of a whirlpool, with events happening one after the other, all around me. Like no other author, I feel like I'm not starting at the beginning, but in the middle of the story. This one deals with prison life, which is a particular interest of mine, and she seemed to know a lot about it. I am not a huge Cornwell fan, but I like her books in general. I haven't read them all, and the ones I have read have been in no particular order, so I struggled a bit with the plot in some spots. This one was not as good as some of her older ones, mainly due to Scarpetta coming across as a damn martyr. Still, there were a few surprises, though it was not hard to figure out whodunit. Too much dialogue at times, but it was decent overall.
