Sinclair has built an interesting world here, and I liked the general idea. There wasn't much to make the romance stand above the usual "surprisingly competent rich guy pursues a girl from the wrong side of the tracks" type of story, though.It still might have been a really fun ride if it wasn't for the glaringly obvious culprit. Having the villain basically twirl an evil mustache nearly every time they were mentioned got really distracting, and it frustrated me that a pair of supposedly intelligent protagonists fell for it.The end of the book was also abrupt and strange, sweeping aside most of the remaining tensions with a few quick sentences of exposition. It was all kind of disappointing. 3.5 stars. I didn't realize that this was part of a series when I read it, but I had no problem with it as a stand-alone. Well-written & a nice balance of adventure and romance.I had one of those start-small-but-end-up-completely-unable-to-ignore-till-it-just-grates reaction to how often characters were referred to by their full names. I'm guessing it helped tie things back to other editions, but it ended up driving me nuts. I got it- he's a Guthrie. Move along.
I liked this book. There was a surprise ending even if it seemed a bit rushed. (I hate that.)
