Once again I read this in a matter of HOURS after a long day at work. It was the perfect treat! I read 350 pgs went to sleep for a few hours, woke up (FLAWLESS...jk) and finished the 50 pgs that I had left. I am committed to this series because it is amazing and wonderful and all the adjectives! No ship is safe in this book. Although my heart grows fonder of Magnus, but then there's Jonas who I adore as well. My emotions are a bundled mess! I felt really conflicted about how to rate this book. On the one hand I flew through reading this book, especially the last third of the book. Things were constantly happening! I was definitely never bored. The story always held my attention and kept me engaged and for that it deserves at least 4 stars. On the other hand, I felt there were too many"shocking" moments. Those moments definitely keep you engaged with the story, but some of those moments felt forced, like they were just put there for shock value. That's my major complaint with the series so far- not enough depth. And so many shocking moments that as a reader you get so used to looking for the next one that it doesn't really come that much of a shock anymore. I feel Rhodes did a good job with developing some of the other characters though, especially Magnus. He's really grown on me. I really can't wait to follow his story line in the next book! I really enjoy all the shifts in character perspectives, something that is a strength with this series, but I'm ending this book feeling like Rhodes has only scratch the surface with character development, motivation and depth. This book is often compared to the A Song of Ice and Fire series, which I agree with as far as the large cast of characters and shifting character perspectives, but this series is greatly lacking compared to that one. I guess maybe it's an unfair to compare these two series since one is adult and the other young adult, but I don't think just because a book is YA that it should lack in character complexity. There are quite a few shocking moments in A Song of Ice and Fire, but those book are really long- usually over 1,000 pages. Those shocking moments made much more sense to me because the readers had much more time to get inside each character's head and more time to create a complex plot. They didn't come just 30-40 pages after the previous shocking moments. But.....that said I still am very excited to move on to the next book. I'm just sad that I can't jump right in and read the 3rd book right away. I know I'm going to receive it as a Christmas present and have to wait until next week now :(
