It's about everything expected from a Marvel comic plus a bunch of morose and unpleasant 9/11 and Iraq parallels. Suicide bombers, buildings collapsing, super-WMDs that kill and wound hundreds (which seem a lot less super when compared to normal WMDs which kill thousands, if not millions). It even has a panel where a bunch of reports condemn ironman as a fascist, killer and war criminal for saving the world (did the writer like Bush and Cheney that much)?Top it off and you have your standard bad comic book writing (which is what I expected) about how the bad guy is bad because he's the son of the other bad guy and looked evil in public. OooOooOoo. Question: Spider-Man having to "register" his identity. Is that a new take on something old in the Marvel Universe? Or is that base on post 9/11 erosion of privacy rights (e.g. you can't protest an wear a mask at the same time)? I can't tell because its never explained in the context. I am rating this so low because I had actually read this before and had forgotten I ever read it. That speaks to how unmemorable this book is. Matt Fraction might be considered a good writer but here he is taking Ellis' idea from Extremis and redoing it. I had happened to reread Extremis before getting this book so the similarities and what was lacking in Fraction's book were glaring. I should also add he also steals from the Armour Wars ideas as well. So like Extremis someone is taking the next leap in the Iron Man evolution - And they are making it part of their body as opposed to an external armour. The villain happens to be the son of an older Iron Man villain which explains why he is hell bent on destroying Stark. Look, this isn't a bad book by any means and if it had been written fist I would even give it a 4 star but the fact it comes across as Extremis light + Armour wars and the art is not to my liking I am being a little harder than I probably should be.
Do You like book Rautamies: Viisi Painajaista (2008)?
A great look at an Iron Man adventure as well as a good starting point for people new to Iron Man.
