This was the very enjoyable story of Rajmund and Sarah. Rajmund is second-in-command to crazy Krystoff and is Master of Manhattan. It seems that these vamps go a bit nutty after being alive for too long. Understandable I suppose.We met Sarah briefly at the end of book 2; she is a friend of Cynthia who leaves California for an assistant professor position in Buffalo, NY. She is a woman hunted by her dreams. She’s able to see and feel the pain of those in danger. I would have liked this to be explored more. Why does this gift seem to come and go? Why is she able to see some people and not others? I’m still unsure if I liked Sarah. Typically I would have found her character annoying but she bared her teeth once in a while and showed a bit of punchiness that I appreciated. Regardless, I didn’t understand why she sought assistance and yet failed to divulge all that she knew. It made no sense to me.Raj and Sarah were instantly attracted to each other and I loved that this portion of the story was dragged out. The sexual tension built up to the point that I shared their relief when they finally dealt with it. Raj is a reluctant leader. He understands the vampire politics and what needs to be done to set things right. But he doesn’t relish in the power or having subjects groveling at his feet.The other character to steal the show was Emelie. She is Rajmund’s confidant, second-in-command and all around badass. Em kicked some ass and also handed Raj’s ass when she could. The ending made me cry out “WHAT!?” Damn you cliffhangers and bravo D.B. Reynolds for ensuring I pick up the next book. The police are investigating the disappearance of a few girls and Lord Krystof doesn't want to dirty his hands. While investigating the missing girls Raj runs into Cyn's friend, Sarah. Sarah is instantly attracted to the Vampire while he does his best to keep her at a distance. This is third book in the Vampires in America series. I loved the two before, they mainly revolved around Cyn and Raphael. I was excited to see where this book went and what Raj's role was in the book. I loved every minute of this book and couldn't put it down. If you enjoy vampire books this series is definitely for you. There is plenty of action and suspense with romance too. Reynolds has really written a well rounded novel and I will definitely be reading the next book asap!
