This is the 8th book in the “Last Apprentice” Series. This is a fantasy series set in the medieval ages. The central character in the series is a boy called Tom Ward who is the Spook’s apprentice. The Spook is a guardian of the residents of Pendle County against creatures like witches, boggarts, demons etc. In this particular book the people of the county are fleeing to Ireland as the county is under seige by invaders from the North. In Ireland also Tom and his friends are pursued by Morrigan the evil witch Goddess who has confronted him in the past and warned him to stay out of her homeland, Ireland. The rest of the book is about how Tom battles Morrigan and the fiend who has been raised by the witches and is hell bent on destroying Tom. In most of this series the Spook fights the dark with light. However I really enjoy how his apprentice Tom fights the dark with dark. I also like how well the evil setting really flowed through the pages. I also enjoy the narration in first person by Tom Ward the central character of the book. It brings you a lot closer to the way the main character thinks. I think this installment actually tipped the scales to my preference of The Last Apprentice from...Harry Potter! This book series is VERY dark, and often gory/slightly disturbing, but I love every minute of it! The Fiend has returned again in this book, as Tom and his troop are in Ireland and working with local landowners to defeat the Goat Mages, who are working to bring the god Pan (and general destruction) to the land. The Spook is continuing to age, and Tom is getting stronger. I really enjoy this series because of the vastly different stories/villains in each series. This story was especially interesting, and I recommend it to anybody, but DON'T let this be the first book in the series you read!
