I just finished this marvelous young adult novel by my author friend Alecia Whitaker. I decided to read this because Alecia and I shared an author table at the Kentucky Book Fair this month … but, boy, am I glad I did! As I settled into this story, I was transported back to my middle and high school years … to those times of wondering who I was, trying to fit in, being alternately delighted and then disgusted by my friends, who were struggling with their identities, too, ... and often goofing up, making mistakes, hurting me and hurting themselves in the process. Alecia brought these teen years to life beautifully … and she also bought to life a slice of Kentucky you don't often find a teen encountering, with main character Ricki Jo living on a rural farm and cutting and hanging tobacco in the fields with her family. Bravo for the great story, wit, and awakenings in this fine book. …. Look for it for any young adults in your life ( or delight in it yourself! ) Definitely one of my most favorite books of all time! I enter into the fandom of Alecia Whitaker. It felt as though I was reading about myself from a far past and my future as a mother to my daughter when she grows up in..... yes a small Kentucky town. Just like me.Perfect for anyone from small town USA, and teenagers (middle and high) battling their inner demons of popularity versus a conscience.
Do You like book Queen Of Kentucky (2012)?
I love how it's not fast-paced— just the right beat. On the downside, it's too predictable.
