What appears to be a simple telling of one day in the life of a diplomat's wife, preparing for a dinner party, is a wonderful, complex, layered story. The 'coincidences' can be forgiven, because it is told so elegantly and eloquently. The atmosphere is beautifully drawn, and I could almost smell the springtime in Paris. I stayed up late to finish it, and woke up in the morning still thinking about it. Definitely recommended. I liked this mystery novel. It travels at a meandering pace, but rather than coming off as slow, or boring, the pacing worked to the story's advantage. The past and present flow together well and are interesting to see presented side-by-side. I loved the backdrop and the level of detail. Good thing I know a little bit of French so I was able to make sense of the numerous lines in that language!
