About book Puppy Diaries, The (2011)

Kayla AllgyerMs. HunterEnglish 910-22-13“The Puppy Diaries: Raising a Dog Named Scout”By: Jill Abramson The following is a summary of this book. The main characters in this book are the narrator/ author, Henry her husband, and their new dog named Scout. While there are many other characters in this book these are the most important ones. The story takes place in a combination of the author’s homes in Connecticut and Manhattan. This is a little troublesome trying to take care of a new puppy and live in two different houses. The point of view is told through the author and all the challenges she comes upon and over comes are in her perspective. The main conflict in this story is how the author is going to get her new puppy trained and whose information she is going to trust when training Scout. The author gets hurt very badly, her old dog dies, and her kids move out. At this point in her life she is very depressed, and is always feeling alone. Her and her husband both have stressful jobs that need time and effort put into at work and at home. Getting a dog is probably the last thing they need in their lives but they do anyways and proceed to name their new puppy Scout. Scout is a girl and is very playful and rambunctious like most puppies. This new dog requires a lot of attention and training that they don’t always have time for but are trying their best to fulfill their duties. This is a quick summary of the book “The Puppy Diaries: Raising a Dog Named Scout”. While there are many strengths to this book there are some weaknesses too. A weakness would be that I thought this book was going to be more about the puppy and less about how to raise just any dog I mean there were tips that anyone could use to train their new dog, I was a little disappointed about that but it was still a good book. Another weakness could be that there was too much background information in the beginning of the book on what happened to her old dog and the reason for getting a new puppy. A strength would be that new puppy owners could get some good tips on training a young dog from this book. There was also a great amount of detail throughout the entire book, there was also many other characters involved with the training of Scout. This was a very good book that a lot of people could learn from. I would definitely recommend this book to many different groups of people, such as a person that really likes dogs, or someone who is training a puppy or has already trained a puppy and could relate to the experience. This book is a fairly quick read, there weren’t many big words that I haven’t heard of before or that are unfamiliar. A book that I could compare “The Puppy Diaries: Raising a Dog Named Scout” to is “Marley and Me” because the dogs share similar characteristics and both need a lot of training as a puppy and while there growing up. “Marley and Me is also a movie so this book could also be compared to a movie. In conclusion, this book was very good and I would read it again. I didn't love the book but certainly enjoyed it. It was part memoir, part informational (on puppy training and care). I liked the unbiased reviews on the main methods of training available because it gave me a little background information on what was what for when I would have my new puppy. I definitely would recommend this book to new dog owners because it is definitely more pleasurable to read than a puppy training books. I would give it 3.5 if I could
