In Inspector Pekkala's second outing, the ex special investigator for the Tsar, now working for Stalin, explores the Russian justice system, avoids the political in fighting, has fascinating flash backs to his days serving the Tsar, and prevents a premature start of WWII while investigating a murdered. The mystery is satisfactory, the history enlightening, the realities of life in dictatorships harsh and unforgiving. Altogether satisfying.Recommended. Anche il secondo romanzo sull'ispettore Pekkala è un bel poliziesco. Lo svolgimento della trama non è facilmente prevedibile, e il capitolo finale è una degna conclusione. Si legge con piacere. Il rapporto tra Pekkala e il suo assistente Kirov cresce di tono, è spesso divertente, e occhieggia a un possibile adattamento cinematografico o televisivo. Sono un po' pesanti, soprattutto nei primi capitoli, i costanti rimandi esplicativi al romanzo precedente: non c'era bisogno di ripetere tutto. E mentre Rasputin (come partecipazione straordinaria) è un personaggio potente e ben disegnato, Stalin rimane invece una - sia pur grande - macchietta.Comunque, complessivamente, il libro crea un mondo in cui è molto piacevole entrare.
