About book Promise (2010)

I do have to admit this reminded me of Twilight- but only in regards to a handsome supernatural stranger who wants to wait until marriage to copulate- and then the similarities end, in fact, the main character makes fun of vampires! As I started out I thought it was going to be about werewolves, I was pleasantly surprised when I learned our mysterious mythical characters were angels and demons! Not your typical paranormal story!Lexie and her mother (who looks quite young for her age!) have moved a lot. They settle in Florida for Lexie to start college and work on her novel. She meets Tristan in one her classes, and quickly falls for him. Lexie is reserved in her feelings for him- she's been branded a freak because she can heal herself- and is scared for him to know the truth. Little does she know Tristan has secrets of his own!The writing was okay, but I soon forgot about the writing because of how intriguing the plot was! It did take a few pages to get into it, but then I was hooked.I'm definitely going to finish this series! I thought the title was pretty weak. Promise does fit the plot but I thought it was a little unoriginal and dull. Cook could have come up with something a bit more unique and unusual. The characters were okay in Promise. I felt they were a little weak but pretty much run-of-the-mill for YA fiction. I found Tristan’s perfect godliness and the endless references to how gorgeous and sexy he was a bit nauseating. Thankfully this started to taper off just over halfway through. I thought Alexis was much better. It was sweet that she never thought Tristan would be interested in her. This also got a bit annoying but calmed down halfway through when got much more balsy. I didn’t like the fact that Alexis was writing a novel that sounded very similar to the one I was reading with ‘characters’ who could have been her and Tristan. I’m not a fan of authors who make characters writers anyway so this was no big deal and just a slight niggle. I liked the older characters including Alexi’s mother and various Amadis members much better. That’s probably because I’m closer to them in age.I really liked the mythology Cook uses in Promise. Alexis and her mother as part of a cult of nearly immortal creatures known as the Amadis. They are enemies with a tribe of evil creatures known as the Daemoni. The Amadis are good, God’s angels as it were. Angels and demons anybody? Does this sound familiar? I’m sure I’ve read a similar myth or two in my time. The videogame Darksiders deals with something similar. I found it interesting.I enjoyed the second half of Promise much more than the first. The first half mostly deals with the development of Alexis and Tristan’s relationship. It was all very sweet, romantic and couply but not really my thing. I wanted the battles and death and murder and chaos to get started already. Cook kept me reading through the first half of the novel by drip-feeding little snippets of information about Alexis and Tristan’s powers, the Amadis and the Daemoni. I had to read on until all the little threads came together. The second half was faster paced. The Daemoni move against Alexis and Tristan and it all gets a little bloody and violent. Cook ends Promise on a cliff-hanger so I now have to read the full Soul Savers series.FINAL THOUGHTSI enjoyed Promise. I like the Twilight saga and The Mortal Instruments series a lot more but Cook is a good writer and creates an interesting, vivid and compelling world. Promise is a novel of two halves. The first half is much slower and builds up Alexis and Tristan’s relationship and the mystery surrounding the Amadis. The second half is a much more intense and satisfying read. I need to read the other books in the Soul Savers series.

Do You like book Promise (2010)?

I bought this book in 2012 because of the cover (the main reason I buy books) and I had it sitting in my kindle all this time until I finally though 'maybe i should read that'. And read it I did. And boy did I love it. I don't know why I waited so long to read this but once I started reading this I couldn't stop. I loved how Alexis' and Tristan's relationship developed. I loved her relationship with her mom and Sheffie (whom I cried for because he was obviously a great guy). And her relationship (once established) with Tristan was one I think every girl dreams about. So this book was basically your dream romance with a paranormal twist. Amazing.

Alright, I got this book and honestly it took me a while to get around to reading it. It was on my TBR list for about a month. (which for me is long once I have a book on my Kindle...I was in the middle of another series and just didn't want to interrupt the story line by reading something else.) By the time I got around to reading it I honestly had no clue what it was about! When I first started reading I noticed a few similarities to the Twilight Saga and I just KNEW that Tristan was going to b
