I must not have paid enough attention to the jacket blurb: I thought I was going to be reading a historical novel, set in New England just after the Revolutionary War. The setting was correct, but this was more a romance than historical fiction. It was entertaining enough as 'last few minutes of the day before I fall asleep' reading, but I was distracted from being fully immersed in the story by the feeling that the book's editor didn't pay enough attention, either. But despite awkward and repetitive descriptions, sometimes strangely worded exposition and telegraphed emotions that didn't always ring true, I did enjoy it enough to make it through to the obvious happy ending.
