About book Prisoner 88 (2013)

Such a different story about 10 year old Jake in 1885. He is sent to prison for killing a person. Written is first person and tells of what life is like for Jake as he tries to survive his 5 year sentence. I truly enjoyed reading this book. I felt like it was a very new, original and different type of story that hasn't been written before. With 142 pages it is a quick read and perfect for reluctant readers wanting it to be longer to learn more about Jake.My favorite line from the book:"But my ears tugged the corners of my mouth into a big old grin." (p. 77)Possible spoilers....Jake learns about taking care of hogs which includes piggies being born. Jake describes the event but I don't think it's too graphic in detail but it may be for some younger students. (Gross factor, maybe, but not overly done). Wow! The way this book was written, pulled me right through the story. Jake is one tough 10 year old. interesting plot based upon a true story that happened in one prison. Wonderful characters besides Jake. There is something about the book cover that I think would not draw readers to it. While it depicts the period of the book and the correct age of the main character, it seems a bit off putting. Do not let this keep you from reading this great and unique storyline.

I thought this book was well written but the end I felt like it wasn't that good for the ending.

Interesting premise but the plot fell short, especially at the end.
