About book Pride, Prejudice, And Cheese Grits (2000)

Admission: I haven't read Christian women's fiction, so I don't have a good baseline for comparison. I picked it up because of the cute title and was interested to discover it was Christian fiction as I began to read. I was hoping this would be my way into this genre. Pride..... has a charming story line: a love story of two professors who begin badly when one trashes the other one's book in a review. It also tips the hat to Jane Austen through the title and some cleverly updated versions to Austen's characters. But it still confirmed what I have feared to be true about Christian women's fiction- that instead of really gripping and unique story lines, the stories appear to be derivative imitations of main stream fiction. I'm sure this isn't always true, I just see a lot of very simple romances ( and I don't mean because of lack of sexual context but what appears to be a basic and predictable story line) packaged this way and the appeal passes me by. Pride, Prejudice, and Cheese Grits is the first novel I have read by Mary Jane Hathaway. It definitely won’t be the last. What a fun and entertaining read! I was hooked from page one and stayed that way all the way to the end. I loved Shelby. She had me cracking up throughout. Especially, in the scene between her and another character, Tasha. Oh my goodness, that had to have been my favorite of the book. Shelby’s roommate, Rebecca, could be pretty funny, too. I would have loved to seen more of her. Maybe even have another novel purely on her and her escapades. I enjoyed her more than Shelby sometimes. Ransom was not a likeable character to me in the beginning but had he grown on me by the end. I really loved the interaction between him and Shelby. That is what you call entertainment. If you are looking for a light read and want a laugh or two (or more), then this one is a read for you. Great novel! I will be looking for more by this author in the future. I highly recommend it.5 starsI received a free copy of this book from Howard Books, for my honest review. The opinions expressed here are my own.

Very good for a light romance. Not my cuppa tea. I like more action.
