About book Pretty One, The: A Novel About Sisters (2013)

Kind of 'silly-ish'. I am a sister, though my story would never be as entertaining as this one. From the book..The Pretty One.."...she was increasingly aware that her age was catching up with her face. Every morning, it seemed, there were new little lines around her mouth and eyes. It was as if she went to bed with a draftsman lying under her pillow."That was such a good 'visual' that it made the entire book worth reading! The relationship between sisters, (and family in general) is sometimes complicated. You don't always like each other. But all the petty sniping, one upping, and insecurities going on in The Pretty One is a little too much. The three sisters: Perri, Pia and Gus (Imperia, Olympia, and Augusta)have a dysfunctional relationship. It's hard to believe they love each other. None of the characters (except for maybe Olympia's 4 year old daughter Lola) are likeable. Perri (the oldest) is successful and lives in the Burbs. She is the martyr daughter. Sacrificing for her parents, caring for her children, and now her husband since he was laid off. Olympia (the middle) is the "pretty" one. She was impregnated via sperm donor. Or so we think. She starts off obsessing over the sperm donor. But is still in love with her married ex. The story starts off with this obsessing. But the storyline goes nowhere. Gus is the youngest. She is also a part time lesbian. I say part time because she starts to date (and sleeps with) Perri's womanizing brother in law after her girlfriend leaves her. I will read other books by this author. But only because her other books have gotten better reviews. So I am hoping this was a fluke.
