About book Prairie Silence: A Memoir (2013)

I can't believe how quickly I read this book. I had the pleasure of attending the casual Meet the Author affair for the MN Book Awards finalists where I heard Melanie talk about this book. What drew me to the book is North Dakota, where I also have roots, and growing up in a small town where it is hard to be anonymous. Like Melanie, I too took the migratory path from small town to "the Cities" and have not gone back except for reunions and other short visits. I liked how easily this read, and just couldn't put it down. I was easily transported back to images, smells and experiences of my own childhood with her rich descriptions of events. I felt her sadness when the barn came down and felt the same temptation to return to the small town as a break in the hustle and bustle of the stresses of the city to help relatives who still live and work there. This book was a pleasant surprise. I got this free through goodreads and this is my opinion. I fell in love with this story immediately. The story bring you into life on the Prairie, for a person trying to reconcile Family, home, love, and faith. Normally Spiritual books don't peak my interest, but this book was very intriguing! It has great word usage to give you a true prairie feel. The characters are well-rounded, and hard to forget!
