About book Positively Mine (2013)

Positively Mine is another offering from Bloomsbury Spark's launch list and it's the best one I've read so far. It's well written and engaging right from then get go, dealing with important issues that affect millions of teenagers every year. Unwanted pregnancy is no laughing matter, and Christine Duval does a great job of portraying both the positive and negative ramifications of the situation.Laurel is a few weeks into her freshman year at college when she discovers that she's pregnant. It's a total shock to her, derailing all her immediate plans and putting her educational future in jeopardy. She deals with it by herself, weighs up her options and ultimately comes to a decision that will change her life forever. As the book goes on, Laurel does open up to a select group of people, but for the majority of her story she is very much alone. When something like this happens, I imagine telling family is the hardest part of all, and that's what Laurel finds herself wrestling with here.College is usually a time for exploration and fun; partying and socialising, finding a place in a new environment and making new lifelong friends. For Laurel, it's a completely different story. She's now got much more responsibility weighing on her shoulders while at the same time trying to keep up with a freshman workload. I find this whole scenario utterly terrifying and I can't even begin to imagine how scary it must be to be faced with something like that at such a young age. Duval shows both sides of the story - good and bad - and lays it all out on the table. The decision Laurel makes is right for her at this moment in time, but she agonises over it and takes a while to get there.Positively Mine is a realistic, intelligent, mature look at one girl's struggle to do what's right for her and live through the scariest time of her life. She's isolated and alone, but still strong enough to get through it and eventually involve the people closest to her. I thoroughly enjoyed accompanying Laurel through this year of her life, and I'm sure someone facing the same problems as Laurel will find great comfort in this book and will hopefully feel less scared and alone. Positively Mine is a mind blowing read!I absolutely loved Laurel's character. I personally have gone through some of what she experiences in this book, so it really hits home. This book is so well written. There was only one part where for a second I could not tell where a flash back ended and had to reread for a second. Overall the book kept me fully engaged and on the edge of my seat. I seriously need more!
