About book Podivuhodné A Krásné Soužení Avy Lavender (2014)
I honestly don't know what to think about this book. A lot of the books I've been reading lately are most definitely outside my normal scope of reading, but this one was even more different than usual. Most of the books I read have very clear conflict, with a case to solve, someone or something to escape, someone to rescue, etc. There's a lot of action, and usually doesn't take place over a long period of time.This book, however, had no clear conflict, no real action until the very end, and took place over three generations of women. It was beautifully written, in a very light, airy way for a book with such heavy and sometimes dark topics. Despite it not being my usual fair, I couldn't put the book down. I wanted to know what happened to the women, I wanted to know how their lives played out. I wanted them to be happy, though reading this book was a bit like watching a train wreck. I could see that something horrible was going to happen a mile away (and I kind of predicted it to, which must have been my writer instinct) but I couldn't stop reading even as I watched the disaster play out.There was a lot of messed up things going on in this book. Sometimes, especially when I read my normal books, I forget that the world is a very messed up place, and that not all people are good people, even if they aren't the villain. And it's books like this one that pull my rose-colored glasses away from my face and remind me.It was still a beautiful book, though. Especially the binding. Although the main character came into the book almost half way through, it was still a wonderful book. The story is a bit slow in the beginning with all the history of the main character's family but was beautifully written. Although this isn't a typical love story I think that is the very reason I love this book and why I gave it five stars. Not all loves work the way we intend them too. I look forward to more books from this author. This book is the type of book I dream of. It leaves me with a feeling of sadness from it being over and makes my heart ache in a way only great books do.
