About book Pleasing The Ghost (2013)

Pleasing the Ghost by Sharon Creech. Loved it. Creech has an amazingly light touch with heavy subjects. Both Pleasing the Ghost and Walk Two Moons deal with the death of a loved one. I’ve read Creech hales from a large, close-knit family, which is why the subject of families is big for her, though not in a clichéd way. Her characters are original. Fresh. Eccentric. Her writing is different, too—clear, concrete—and her sentences are highly varied as opposed to consistently simple. Similarly, her humor doesn’t rely on predictable rhetorical devices like exaggeration, understatement, etc. In Pleasing the Ghost, for instance, Dennis realizes Uncle Arvi’s come back as a ghost because he has some unfinished business—he wants three pleases (wishes—Uncle Arvi had a stroke and mixes up his words. This is one of the most fun and innovative parts of the book.). Who else besides Creech could deal with the subject of a stroke in such a humorous, entertaining way and yet still get across its pathos? Maybe that is what’s special about her—her unique combination of humor and pathos.

I would give this book two and a half stars. It is a relatively short story, featuring a fast-moving narrative that is effectively attached to highly memorable characters. I think it is safe to say that all kinds of readers will be drawn in by the not-so-nonsensical ramblings of Dennis's Uncle Arvie, and the three "pleases" that the two embark upon will present very fun material for any reader. There were several laugh-out-loud moments for me over the course of reading "Pleasing the Ghost". The feeling behind the book (which, in my mind, is what ultimately makes Sharon Creech such an outstanding writer) is quieter in these pages than in such volumes of hers as "Absolutely Normal Chaos" and "Walk Two Moons", but it is nonetheless there, and I feel richer for having encountered this story. When one picks up any Sharon Creech book one is in for a treat, and "Pleasing the Ghost" was a nice such treat for me.

Do You like book Pleasing The Ghost (2013)?

I might have an unnatural obsession with this book. I just really really enjoy it. I remembered reading it when I was in elementary school and doing a diorama on it. I used telephone wire to make an outline of a man and put hot pink Barbie boots on it. So that's why I remembered it when I got to GR and decided to reread it. It is the story of a young boy who has lost his father and now has ghosts of his relatives mostly stop in and see him. The story picks up when his Uncle's ghost comes instead of the boy's father. The Uncle Arvie had a medical condition where his speech is mostly riddles and references. He is not capable of speaking clearly, but expresses what he wants is sort of puzzles. I really enjoy trying to figure out his expressions before the book reveals the translations. His Uncle has 3 unfulfilled desires that he requests from Dennis. It is so sweet and parts really made me tear up and think about how much I love my husband. Definitely going to be a stable on my children's bookcase.

This book i read is about a nine year old boy named dennis, and about how every since his father died he has been bothered by ghosts in his bedroom. One night the ghost of dennis uncle shows up wanting something from the boy,but its up to dennis to figure out what his uncle wants. The main character dennis was a pretty interesting kid he was very smart for his age and thoughtful, because of the way his father taught him before he died. But the part of the story i did not like was when the ghost of dennis uncle tries to hurt dennis by telling him his father is never coming back and how he would never see him again, also that he would haunt him 4 the rest of his life. But over all it was a pretty good story.I think people should read this book if they like adventure filled with drama and conflict,If u like books like that this book would be great for you.
