About book Place Called Armageddon: Constantinople 1453 (2011)
C.C.Humphreys has a standing reputation for his intricate attention to detail in his research for one of his novels. Though this book, " A Place Called Armageddon " is a fictionalized version of the events, this would apply mainly to the characters interaction and not the actual basis of the story. There is no doubt that the Turks tried for 1000 years to capture the city of Constantinople, this is the story of their last attempt.The authors weaves in sound historical facts and blankets them around a set of primary figures, a love triangle, two brothers, warriors and the true horror of war. My pen is held ransom, if I write to much I fear that I will deprive you of the story and its cliffhanger suspense as the battles rage's. So with that said, I will simply say it is an engrossing historical novel. This particular book cannot travel by air, I would suggest it in an easy chair by the fire with a hot cup of tea. This should be a book that I love. The fall of Constantinople was a pivotal part of history killing off the final vestiges of the Roman Empire This was an epic but essentially mediocre book.The hero of the story was Greogas who had his nose cut off as punishment for being suspected of betraying the Constantinople before. He could have been a much more interesting character and I grew weary of his adventures. His ex-wife Sofia had the inner fire of a water bubble for most of the story and annoyed me to no end.I do appreciate the story not painted as a story of good vs bad ... Turk vs Greek. And the author took to great lengths in the descriptions of crossbows and bows. The prologue was epic in a great way.So it's an OK book about the fall of Constantinople .. but in the end, I much just prefer the They Might be Giants song about Constantinople.
