I was actually pleasantly surprised at this book. I didn't really enjoy Leven Thumps, and I was skeptical about reading another by this author. However, it turned out to be rather typical youth fiction. It is one that I think middle readers would really enjoy.During the first half of the book, I felt like I was reading a clever rewrite of the Secret Garden. But, the book veered quite a bit away from that later one. It was good. This was a good book. I liked how the author explained the setting and how it made the picture of it in your mind. The characters were very interesting. Beck was very adventurous and liked meeting new people. He also was on the lookout for any other friends. After his mom died, Beck went to Kingsplot and lived with his uncle. It was a good book because of the suspense the author uses at the climax of the story
This is the kind of thing you get when you write for a job, not from the heart.
