About book Peter Pan Nei Giardini Di Kensington (1906)
Although it was originally only a few chapters in Barrie's novel "The Little White Bird," the collected origin of the famous character Peter Pan is at once whimsical and melancholy in "Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens." Barrie's focus is clearly on entertaining child readers, and so little jokes are sprinkled through the narrative like fine herbs, and digressions into fairy life and creatures in the park are frequent. The story's focus, though, is clearly on the title character, who abandons his wholesome London life for fear of having to take on adult responsibilities. His ken for freedom leads him to a life amongst the birds and plants, and then the fairies, that inhabit Kensington Gardens. While I won't spoil the story's emotional core, it suffices to say that even in the story's short page count, the character of Peter Pan is clearly and indelibly written as a tragic, melancholic figure--far from the flighty and absent-minded sprite in Disney's film versions. This characterization by Barrie is what drives the poignancy and lasting importance of the Peter Pan mythos. And for anyone interested in delving into this literary classic, there's no better place to begin than "Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens."

A little weirder than I was anticipating, but amusing.
