About book Perdition (2013)

I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about this book, as it's a bit out of my normal preferred genres--I don't read much straight-up science fiction at all. But, it showed up as a recommendation on amazon, and after reading the preview at GR, I decided to give it a shot.I was so glad I did. I really enjoyed it a lot. Set entirely in a prison ship in space, the book has a level of intensity and sense of danger that never lets up throughout the course of the book. You can also feel the oppressiveness that one must feel living in a prison ship with the most hardened criminals in the universe. There is a constant, unrelenting struggle for survival. It's almost claustrophobic at times. The characterization is fantastic (I love Dred so, so much), and I love the fact that the author doesn't shy away from the fact that these characters are on this ship for a reason, none of them are innocent, and they have all done very bad things on the outside. Yet, the author still manages to make you feel for them...you care about what happens to them. I know that this is a spin off from another of the author's series--a series which I have not read, so I can say with confidence, that even if you have not read the other series will not be at all lost while reading this book. At least I wasn't. I’m so happy that Ann Aguirre has returned to her SciFi roots! Perdition is up there with Sirantha Jax for me. Perdition is dark; but it should be since the book is set in a floating prison city in space and Aguirre’s writing conveys that world to perfection. Dread is an amazing female character and I can’t wait to read more. The criminal machinations that Dread is continually up against are truly frightening and let me in awe of her. The supporting characters add variety and further plotlines to the series that will be interesting to see develop. I also enjoyed how Aguirre incorporated some of the characters and events of her Sirantha Jax series; while providing a fresh and futuristic continuation of a series.Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It was non-stop action from a slow start that has me looking forward to Havoc, the next installment. Well done.
