About book Patti LuPone: A Memoir (2010)

I read this four years ago when it first came out. When I recently came across the unabridged audiobook version, I decided to spend time with it again, most especially because LuPone herself is the narrator. This is a first-rate theater memoir, full of backstage detail (not just gossip), delivering true insight into the theatrical process. It is kind of amusing that so many of her stories are fraught with drama, and I suspect that has a lot to do with LuPone's intense personality. But her nightmares make for great reading. And having both read the book and listened to the audiobook, I'd highly recommend the latter. Wanna be an actor? Wanna go into show business? Then this book is a must-read. Like backstage showbiz gossip? Then this book is for you too. Riveting, never dull, occasionally bitchy and always truthful, Patti LuPone holds nothing back and pulls no punches. If she didn't like her co-stars, she lets you know who. Also, it's telling which co-stars she had that she doesn't mention. She must really hate them. But you will love this book.

You can hear her voice as you read. She's funny and brash. Theatre trash heaven.
