About book Patriotic Duty (2000)

READ AS PART OF THE HEARTS ON FIRE ANTHOLOGY:This, so far, is the best book in this Anthology. Its not only a full length novel, but its also good and keeps the reader engaged. I automatically liked Riley when he was first introduced, he was the strong, quiet type for being so young. He seemed very sure of himself, until his accident, but anyone in that situation would have self conflicting issues as well. Overall he was a very likable character, he did anger me when he lied,I didn't see that coming and I was really shocked because he was really sweet but once I found out why he lied....it all made sense!Cara was a different story. I think she was shallow, annoying and despite her being a few years older than Riley she acted like an immature child. She didn't carry herself like an adult, single mother. More like an overgrown teenager with male issues. I think she was more driven by her BFF, who was so insecure it was pathetic, which is why she slept around so much, until she found her ball player. It wasn't until Cara lost Riley that I think she finally grew up and became an adult! There were two reasons why I read this today: 1) It's middle of the month and no budget for new books till pay day, so dived into the 250 odd books sitting on my kindle waiting to be read. An unfortunate occurrence where my one-click is bigger than the hours available to actually read!!! 2) I had an unprecedented afternoon of no children and could just curl up with a book! This book surprised me. It was the blurb that intrigued me...(the cover and title is a bit cheesy) but I started reading and got caught up. It was very "wordy" almost written like a diary and sometimes far too descriptive in the un-necessaries and not enough in the necessities!! Usually I don't fare well with this type of narrative, but I was intrigued and I just needed to get to the next chapter and wait for the train-wreck......so many scenarios spinning round my head!!! At times Cara was whiney, contradictory with her values or questioned her emotions too much, you just wanted to hug her. Riley was just.....just too smitten!!I actually got a little choked up with the reunion in the airport, maybe it's the frame of mind I'm in at the moment, but the emotions were raw and the "what if this was you" would you react any differently???? So, it was an engaging read, a few niggles kept me from going overboard about it, but I have discovered there is a second book from Riley's POV covering his deployment and return, so I have put that on my wishlist for payday and look forward to reading it.

Do You like book Patriotic Duty (2000)?

I didn't like the writing style. Very adolescent. but it was free, so I didn't expect much
