Whenever I read a novel by Jolene Perry, I can be sure I'm going to at least like it. But I've never read anything by Nyrae Dawn and so wasn't sure I'd enjoy this one. Well I did, five stars worth. Both main characters, Penny and Bishop, were well drawn and I found myself rooting for them throughout the story. I loved the setting being in Alaska. I loved Gramps and all the boys on Penny's team. In fact, I really can't think of anything I didn't like about this book except maybe the profanity. I know that's how teenagers talk, but I still... :-) Can you love someone if you do not love yourself. Some of the recent books that I've read have battled that very idea. Penny has been fighting her whole life for what she wanted, but when it comes down to it, will her voice be heard over her mother's? Bishop is in denial about his 'problem' with pills. When the two comes together there is a hurricane of emotions that are begging to be understood and figured out.I'm a big fan of Jolene Perry and was ready to read this book. This is the first time I read anything by Nyrae Dawn and she does not disappoint. Even though this book was written by two different authors, their written words flow in a manner that the reader will not feel the disconnected talking of two different people. The characters get in your head so that you feel their pain. A book anyone who is looking for a second chance should pick up.
