This is a beautiful story about God transforming lives--Angela and Leon, parents, and Christopher, their son. Christopher's homosexuality, drug abuse, and time in prison are events that bring them into dark despair and out into the light of Christ's love. Chris's discussion on 'holy sexuality' is such a beautiful explanation of God's plan for mankind and how we have messed up: "I believe homosexuality (and any other sin, such as jealousy, pride, and gluttony) stems from a legitimate need fulfilled in an illegitimate way." He goes on to say, "God's faithfulness is proved not by the elimination of hardships but by carrying us through them. Change is not the absence of struggles; change is the freedom to choose holiness in the midst of our struggles. I realized that the ultimate issue has to be that I yearn after God in total surrender and complete obedience." Wonderful words that both challenge and comfort me! Christopher and his mom are very open, honest and genuine in their sharing of this story of their journeys to Christ and into forgiveness, grace and hope. This is a great read for a perspective of personal journey through struggles and suffering. And though the "topic" of the book is Christopher's homosexuality and its impact on his life, it really isn't about that--the book is the story of a man and his parents as they battle pain, fear, loss and confusion.
