A very unique and touching story. At first I thought it was a tad on the weird side, but this love story quickly grew on me. This title is rather deep, and tackles some serious themes- comedy vs. tragedy, characterization, interracial love, and independence just to name a few. I recommend this title for classroom lesson and general read aloud use. The illustrations are beautiful (kids will love them), and the story is very compelling. What an odd story. It's a Texas 2x2 selection, so some wise librarians think it would be good for your little rugrat, but really it's a kind of complicated parable. A nice, complicated parable, but obtuse none-the-less. I would recommend it for a 3-5 grader to teach character education (finding strength to do what your heart says, creative problem solving, standing up for yourself, showing unconditional love.)Go read it. It's good.
