The end of the Wallander mysteries yet ,chronologically, it takes place in 2002 and Kurt is feeling old and tired. Thirty years on the force and he is still on Mariagatan, still hoping for a house in the country and the big dog. Martinson has a family property that is for sale and thinks Kurt will like it, and he does until they find a very old body in the form of a skeleton in the garden. This is a short novelette, a quick read, but quirky and fine. Linda is now on the force and sometimes I think that I need to review to make sure I have all the chronology in place. I'm sorry to see Kurt into the twilight but there are so many good Mankell books that I still have quite a few yet to read and I look forward to that. The end of the Wallander books is still a good thing. The series lives and will. An enjoyable read. I admit I watched the PBS Wallander Mystery Series staring Kenneth Brannaugh. I was prepared for the solitude, the minimal conversation, the sort of dark personality Wallander possesses. He certainly loves his daughter. But he also loves and seeks peace and quiet . This mystery happens while Inspector Wallander is searching for a home in the country. He wants to retire from police work. He wants a dog , a garden, a nice home situated with a view where he can hear the sounds of autumn. Instead, he discovers while checking out the garden a hand sticking out of the ground! So instead of finding his retirement home , he is deep into solving a murder. How the clues peel away is always a marvel to me. Mysteries are so interesting. Pay attention to all the details no matter how mundane they seem...and the truth will slowly emerge.
