About book Orso Ha Una Storia Da Raccontare (2013)

Stead, P., C. (2012). Bear has a story to tell. New York, NY: Roaring Book Press.School Library Journal- 2012Choice A sweet, lovable bear has a story to tell to his friends, but unfortunately, none of them have time to stop and listen due to preparations for the coming winter. Finally, the sleepy bear hunkers down into his own cozy den to spend the winter in hibernation. At last, spring has arrived and all of his friends gather around to listen to Bear's tale, but alas, Bear can not remember it. This lovely story is about Bear's friends working together by helping Bear remember the story he was going to tell them. The endearing illustrations portray great expression and details to animals' faces which help readers (K-3) empathize with them, especially Bear. This book would be a great resource to a science lesson which is used to identify how animals adapt to the changing seasons, different habitats, and the causes of the four seasons. It also models the benefits of working together by helping your friends. This is a charming book with some beautiful illustrations. The plot is simple; Bear attempts to tell his friends a story, but they are all too busy getting ready for winter. I read this to my kindergarten, first and second graders as part of Minnesota's Star of the North Readers' Choice award, but I think it would work better as a bedtime story than as a read aloud during story time. It just moves slowly, which I suppose is intentional, as the animals are getting ready to hibernate, but I will be surprised if this one wins. I can see it being used on a unit about what happens to animals in winter or as an example of practicing empathy and friendship, but it was just a little flat to me.

Beautiful illustrations and such a kind, gentle protagonist. A little anticlimactic.
