About book One World, One Day (2009)

This book has beautiful pictures from National Geographic that tell the story of how children all over the world spend a day. It starts in the morning showing children in different countries waking up, eating breakfast, getting ready for school, their type of school, activities after school, eating dinner, and finally going to bed. It reaches many cultures and focuses on children. I believe this book would be good for all levels of elementary education because the pictures are of real children and not too cutesy. With such diversity in our classrooms today, this is a good book to show children that we are all the same no matter if we do things differently than ourselves. I would use this book at the beginning of a school year to set the tone for treating everyone respectfully despite our differences.Kerley, B. (2009). One world, one day. Washington, D.C.: National Geographic. Theme: Similarities and differences in cultures for kidsA very simplistic book (210 words according to the author) and turns it into a complex story. Beautiful pictures tell the story. I loved how the back of the book explained each picture and the map that illustrated where the pictures were taken. A great story to get kids to wonder… Wonder about the kids in the pictures and how their lives might be similar or different from each one of them.Use in the classroom: Great book for introducing the term culture using a concept that is universal. I would love to use it when we study the continents as well. Technology Connection: Have the kids take the words of the story and add in their own pictures using a slideshow so that they have their own version of the story and have them share them with one another and notice the similarities and differences of each one (even though we live in the same community we don't always have the same experiences of perceptions).
