I was very happy with this book. The language is enviably simple, and the sentences tend towards the shorter side. The result is fantastic. The book is odd. It makes enabling an apocalypse a relatable experience. The character motivations are well-expressed, and even as a generally calm person I found myself understanding Jackie's rage. There's much good to say about this book. It's certainly on the odder side, and may not be for all (especially not for the faint of heart). But I, for one, loved it. It's off-kilter in an enjoyable manner.I think the thing that made me feel best about what could be construed as a story about how monsterous people can be... was that all the characters acted out of love. Love is what makes horror possible for One Bloody Thing After Another. That's as frightening as it is moving. I don't think this is a horror novel, exactly. Sure it has elements of horror but it is mostly bizarre people and maybe a ghost or monster or two thrown in the mix. I liked parts of it, but I wasn't terribly impressed with Comeau's writing style. At the beginning it switched between different characters by chapter, but toward the end it fcused on mainly the two girls, and I'm not sure I like how all of the little stories were wrapped up in the end. It's a pretty quick book to read, I read it in maybe 45 minutes to an hour. I'd probably recommend this to people that get scared easily but want to try horror, because it is barely scary.
