About book Official Book Club Selection: A Memoir According To Kathy Griffin (2009)
What did I know about KG before this book? Funny lady, s*it disturber, considered to be Joan Rivers' replacement. As a long established tradition, I try to get audiobooks in author's own voice with such autobiographical works. So I checked out the audiobook on Friday... And this book was a gem! I couldn't turn off the iPad until I raced through the book by Sunday, I was so engrossed. It reminded me so much of Rue McClanahan memoir. A girl from a good family, struggling to be an actress, getting sidekick roles until something great came along, making poor relationship choices. And just like Rue did NOT devote her book to gossiping about the Golden Girls, I loved, loved, loved, that Kathy focused more on life rather than celebrity gossip. It was soul searching and soul baring at times. Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of material about certain celebrities here, but all examples are revealing of yet another side to KG, something that made me think, I want to meet you and I want to have a drink with you, and I don't need to hear any gossip, I just want to talk to you. Soldier on Kathy!PS. Did they cut emails with Wozniak from the audiobook? Keep on seeing it in other comments, but didn't have them in my version.PPS: today they announced KG is the official replacement for Joan Rivers, the day after I finished her audiobook. You go girl! I expected this book to be funnier and more sarcastic, but it turned out to be more serious than I expected - which actually turned out to be a good thing. I've read 4 comedian biographies so far (they're almost the only biographies that I like) including Tina Fey, Ross Matthews, Mindy Kaling, but this one stood out most. Kathy gave us a peek inside the more serious and darker aspects of her life, which made me more sympathetic to the loud, seemingly obnoxious comedian that she supposedly is. Also, she is a very smart woman who knows what she wants, is not afraid to get it, and eagerly learns from any and every mistake. That being said, Kathy's trademark wit and sarcasm does shine through in her writing. My only wish is that there were more juicy stories about celebrities! The ones she published simply weren't enough (hence the 4 not 5 stars)!
