About book Off The Map: Lost Space, Feral Places And Invisible Cities And What They Tell Us About The World (2014)

This book was intriguing and captivating cover to cover. The author flits around the globe briefly profiling places that don't "fit" our standard ideas of geography, from an island that was in the map for years but never existed to the enclaves of the Netherlands and Bangladesh, places where the edges of two countries intermingle. The author brings in history, geography and philosophy while never letting the book settle into a plod. A fun, informative read that makes me want to learn more about these places. From underground cities of Cappadocia to trash and pumice islands, floating cities and Chernobyl Alastair Bonnett has made a search of obscure places so interesting to a lover of geography. In the third grade I discovered my love of geography when I read of the sand dines of Michigan and could hardly believe that there were other sand dunes in other places besides New Mexico and again I enjoyed geography in the 7th grade and developed wanderlust that has not abated and world geography in College that inspired the love of travel and reading about life in other places. This book is so informative about places that I will only read of but not see.

Fascinating insight into lost cities and places. As a geography and history buff my kind of book.
