About book O Incrível Cabeça De Parafuso E Outros Objetos Curiosos (2012)

A little different from the Mignola I'm used to, more humor. Still had the dark overtones that I really like and I loved how each of the stories gave hints that they might not be entirely separate. This almost seemed like an outlet for some of Mignola's more "crazy" ideas. Take for example, "The Witch and Her Soul", which has almost nothing to do with the witch in question... but follows the conversation between two homunculi worried about what will happen to them after their creator's death, and the devil who claims ownership over them now. Or "The Magician and The Snake" about a friendship between a snake and a magician that made a horrible trade in order to be able to do magic. Great stuff. The title story was hilarious, some of the characters in the story beg for more to be written about them. Emperor Zombie is an incredible villain. Combined with Abraham Lincoln being a character and the revelation of a turnip that contains a small universe and we have a winner.I also really like "The Prisoner of Mars". Lots of convolutions that all makes sense by the end. Also interesting to see Mignola shift ever so slightly from his "modern-folklore" style to a story about aliens.Overall each story was memorable and I really liked this collection. This quasi-steampunk hero known as the Amazing Screw-on Head is essentially a head that can be attached to different bodies---each one stylized to meet a different challenge. He/it serves at the whim of President Lincoln, often getting sent out to battle odd mystical creatures and/or strange conspiracies. Crazy-nutso fantasy/horror/adventure, this volume includes the original one-shot comic that came out in 2002, some other shorts that have been collected in various Dark Horse mags as well as some all-new material. In its early days Hellboy was, at least in part, a series with a lot of humor and satire to it. In recent years, though, much of that humor has been dropped for the bigger, darker storylines. But this new collection reminds me of how crazy and funny Mignola can be.

Very strange, my first Mike Mignola graphic novel I've read, but amazing all the same.

Neat idea that didn't quite hit the mark. The art is far superior to the story.
