The name of the book I read was Hitler's Secret by William Osbourne. It takes place during World War II and is about two young teenagers currently residing in England, who are recruited for a top secret mission. The two receive fake identities of brother and sister. They are to capture a young girl, of great significance towards Adolfo Hitler. Then they must act as a fake family travelIng across the border of Switzerland to visit their godmother. The book follows them arriving in Germany and their long grueling attempt to safely make it to the rendezvous point, with the most feared man in Germany right on their tail. Spies and the arts of secret agents is a reoccurring theme in the book. Along with that, both Otto and Leni have suffered losses due to the Nazi party. Several times throughout the book, Leni and Otto are presented opportunities of vengeance upon the ones who have hurt them so greatly. With its shocking twists and thought provoking actions, Hitler's Secret is an open ended lesson to the reader about the decisions one must make when presented power. They receive the fake identities of brother and sister Otto and Leni Fischer. The specifics of the mission is not given to them, but the young girl they must capture is of great significance towards Adolfo Hitler. The girl is currently inhabiting an island in Germany known as Fraueninsel. She is to act as their fake sister while they travel across the border of Switzerland to visit their godmother. Although no such godmother will be awaiting their arrival, but rather Sir MacPherson at the rendezvous point. Meanwhile the entire time, Hitlers best man, Heidrich is on the hunt for them. Otto was born in Munich, Germany but was forced to escape due to his father's communist affiliations. Levi is a jew who was forced to leave her home in Austria once the Nazi party took over. Angelika is the nine year old girl who has lived on the island of Frauenisel since age five under the watchful eyes of the strict nuns that live there. Hitler has the girl hidden and protected due to propaganda significance due to whatever secret she holds. Heydrich is the most feared man in Germany next to the Führer, and will stop at nothing at Hitler's commands to keep the girl safe and in German hands. "It was so black that when the ground came up to meet her, Lenin only just managed to see it before her boots slammed down" (Osbourne Pg. 51). ""This," said Heydrich, placing the muzzle of his service pistol on her right temple and pulling the trigger (Osbourne Pg. 128)"As their hands touched, the mystic stepped back, pulling his hand free" (Osbourne Pg. 196). Hitler's Secret was a well written book that I suggest to all. My overall rating of it would be a four out of five stars. I enjoyed the journey that the Fischers took across Germany and the constant barrage of obstacles that they were required to overcome. Vice versa, I also greatly enjoyed Heydrich's conquest to disrupt the young agents mission and prohibit them from completing it.The narration would switch off between characters for every chapter, a writing strategy that I have enjoyed in past books. The book appeared to be rather predictable, but had me pleasantly surprised me at the very end. Like James Bond, Otto and Leni are handpicked for an important mission, which is to remove a 9 year old girl from Nazi Germany. Osborne writes a fast-paced mystery that I believe many of my seventh graders would enjoy. The book is an easier read, although a few British terms and German words are included. Osborne incorporates Rudolf Hess, Heinrich Muller, and Reinhard Heydrich into the text, and reading the book caused me to want to learn a little more about these Germans.
