About book Notice And Note: Strategies For Close Reading (2013)

Just on p.20 and I love this book!! The authors discuss "rigor" in the classroom and have this to say, "Rigor is not an attribute of a text but rather a characteristic of our behavior with that text." Can I get an AMEN?And another notable quote (p.82): "We want to teach our students to be alert for certain features as they read, to take responsibility themselves for pausing and reflecting when they spot them, to own and ask a few potentially powerful questions at those moments, and to be willing to share an revise their thoughts in responsible conversation with others." That is exactly what we try to do, but it is increasingly becoming an impossible task as we have to balance this goal with the harsh reality of preparing our students to take and pass high stakes end of year tests.I will keep this quote in mind this year and let it be a guiding principle in my classroom! And...oh yeah...can I get an AMEN? Over the years, we have come to expect quality works from Beers and Probst, and Notice and Note does not disappoint. This book has helped me revisit reading instruction, particularly how I teach struggling readers. It's research based, fool-proofed (and differentiated!) lesson outlines will most definitely be used in my classroom this year. The six signposts will also guide my conferencing with students this year.
