"Not Without Hope" is a compelling and honest account of a deep-sea fishing trip that turned into a nightmare. Early on February 28, 2009, Nick Schuyler, a fitness trainer, NFL players Marquis Cooper and Corey Smith, and Will Bleakley, Nick's best friend, headed out into the Gulf of Mexico in Cooper's twenty-one-foot boat. Around four in the afternoon the weather had gotten bad and they knew they had to head back. But an unfortunate decision caused their boat to capsize, and the grim ordeal had begun.I don't know when I have been so gripped by a book. It was horrifying and tragic...but they struggled so courageously. It will haunt me for a long time. This was an amazing memoir--Nick tells his story of being out fishing in the Gulf of Mexico with three friends, and describes the details of how their boat flipped over, and they survived for hours in the stormy waters. The bravery and instinct to survive was amazing--two guys would swim back under the flipped boat to find lifejackets and anything they could to increase their odds of survival. Unfortunately, b/c they were all top-notch athletes, they had very little body fat to insulate them in the freezing temperatures, and most had on very little clothing. Nick did a fantastic job of portraying his emotions as his friends die one by one. Really an amazing read--I found it hard to put down and just wanted to read and read.
