It is a cute dog story. However, the main story is about Gil and his relationship issues. His girlfriend Sara plays second to any woman who walks into his life. Sara is his safety net. He keeps going back to her instead of just letting her go to find someone else. Gil can talk to his dogs. Jimmy is his favorite of the four. He checks out of the story in the middle and comes back in at the end. Gil is a house sitter for a wealthy couple who have a few houses. When they want to be in that house, he has to find somewhere else to live. He bounces around from place to place and the reader gets to follow his journey. I found the main character annoying from the book's first two sentences, but I assumed that he would become more likeable with the help of his talking dogs. Nope. This book wasn't really about the funny things that dogs might say or teach us. The dogs didn't really have much of interest to say at all. It was about an irritating, unlikeable man and his irritating relationships with other people. Very disappointing.
Clever write with the dogs as characters,but by no means a cutesy story. It's about a slacker in LA.
