About book No Way Down: Life And Death On K2 (2010)
Having been a serious mountaineer in my younger days, I am big fan of true-life adventures involving Earth's high peaks. John Kraukaur's "Into Thin Air" and Joe Simpson's "Touching the Void" and "This Game of Ghosts" are three of my favorites. While the aforementioned books are first hand accounts of the adventures described, Graham Bowley's story of the ill-fated 2008 K2 climbing disaster was cobbled together from interviews Bowley conducted with the actual climbers involved. He does a great job of smoothing out the narrative and streamlining the story. We don't get much backstory for the main characters, but that is OK IMHO, because it is the urgency of the situation that matters. The book starts off fast and keeps up the pace throughout. High recommended for mountaineering buffs or anyone looking for a story of adventure in the face of tragedy. You already know the outcome, but this book has you gripped from start to finish! You're right there on the K2, where literally every step is crucial between life and death. This is not just a book for Mountaineers, it does not matter if you have knowledge of Climbing or not, it is very well written and an excellent 'must' read.It will stay with you and It is a keeper!Proud to have this on my bookshelf.
