About book Night Of The Purple Moon (2012)

A coming of age book, I enjoyed it thoroughly. There's realism but not fatalism in these pages. It's a story of courage and hope. Character development is a strong point, though I think secondary characters could have been more fully developed. It's a relatively short book but much happens within the confines of limited page count. Unlike many authors of other series, Mr. Cramer weaves a complete story but whets our appetite for the next book in the series. Night of the Purple Moon tackled a heavy subject, the world's adult population wiped out by a viral outbreak, leaving the children to fend for themselves. However, the ugly side of human nature was largely sidestepped by focusing on the effects the plague had on the population of a small island. Only three characters on the island revealed human nature's uglier side, and even then, not so much. Later the book touches on what happened on the mainland, which was hinted at being much darker. I would have preferred to see more of a 'Lord of the Flies' element in there. On the whole, I found the book hard to get into since it failed to grab and hold my attention, and it took several sittings to read it. The sentences seemed a tad simplistic (or too clipped perhaps), and I could not connect with the characters. I also cringed every time Toucan spoke, which was more like a person learning English as a second language than as an infant. Abby's accomplishments towards the end, while so weak and ill, were somewhat miraculous to say the least. The characters in the book were many and varied, and the tragic subject of the children dying when they reached puberty, and the reaction of their friends and siblings, was handled well.

Heartbreaking harrowing tale of horror. I hate stories where children suffer.
