About book Night Flight: Amelia Earhart Crosses The Atlantic (2011)
This story does a wonderful job at illustrating Amelia Earhart's journey across the Atlantic. She was the first woman to do this, and this book gives great detail regarding what she went through. It uses suspense when Amelia is flying through the storm, exhausted, and realizes that there is gas leaking from her plane. It also includes quotes from Amelia Earhart herself which gives a personal feel to the story. It shows that women are just as capable, if not more, of doing what men can do. This would be an appropriate book to use when discussing gender barriers and women's history. I would use this book in a fourth or fifth grade classroom. This biography tells the story of Amelia Earhart's night flight across the Atlantic. A great narrative nonfiction book for young readers. I like how this book took one of Amelia Earhart's many accomplishments and made it into a readable text for students. The themes of trying new things, perseverance, and hope ring through the author's choice of words. My favorite line, "She loves what she likes to call 'first-time things.' She remembers roller coasters, bicycles, barebacked horses."
