About book Nicolski (2011)

What an interesting book. Two male and one female characters live their lives and the reader watches as the characters' orbits come closer and closer. The characters are strong and interesting, and witnessing the characters come closer and closer to interaction is hypnotic. I borrowed this book from the library on a whim--and name recognition from Canada Reads--and enjoyed it immensely. Recommended. There were a few moments when this book tantalized me - almost seemed like a masterpiece (another great Canadian novel). It didn't quite make it and the moments of near-greatness were ultimately balanced by segments that were frustratingly frivolous. It strikes me that then author fell into the trap of liking his characters too much, so at times they did not seem entirely authentic. Still, it is an entertaining read and very interesting at parts. It had the added attraction to me of being largely set in Montreal (parts of the city that are a familiar part if my past) and the descriptions of the streets, weather and feeling of place are very endearing.

Do You like book Nicolski (2011)?

Not as good as it's been made out to be. Well written, but not very interesting or compelling.

Funny, intriguing, epic on a Canadian scale - i.e. a small epic across a vast landscape?
